Discovering God’s Will for Your Life

As some of you know, 3 months ago we sold our hardware store in Arizona.

As my time there was nearing the end, I began to pray about what was next for me.  I wanted to know, “What is God’s will for my life?”

After pouring my heart and soul into that business for 4 ½ years just to walk away empty-handed and broken-hearted, I wanted to know what God wanted me to do next.  I remember at small group one night telling the our friends there that I didn’t have the energy or strength to invest four years of my life into something new again, only to have it not work out.  So I asked them to pray for direction for me. I prayed about it myself.

Have you ever been there?  At a crossroads in life wondering, “What next, God?”

Have you ever been frustrated because all you want is to do God’s will, but it doesn’t seem like God is giving you clear direction?

What if there was an easier way to figure out your next step?

What if you didn’t have to lay awake at night wondering what you should do with your life?  What if there was a clear answer for you?

I believe there is an easier way…and it begins with a small mind shift.

Rather than asking God’s will for your life hoping to find an occupational answer, what if you began asking God for your mission in life?

Let me show you what I mean as we break down this verse found in Ephesians 2:8 {NIV}

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

In those moments of searching,  I used this verse as a prayer guide for discovering His next steps for me.

First I began asking myself, “What gifts and talents has God given me that are unique to me?”

Second, I began to ask God, “How can I use the gifts, talents, passions or interests that You gave me to share the love of Jesus with others?”

Finally, I began to watch for opportunities to use the gifts, talents, passions and interests that God gave me to serve others and love on others.

I began with one day at a time.  Asking, “What can I do today to use my gifts to love on people around me?”

Then again the next day, “What can I do today to use my gifts to love on people around me?”

And it continues…day after day, I ask this question.

As I did, it became clear, that my passion and gifts and talents and opportunities to love kept pointing to women I could encourage and love on in my life.

This has been my passion for many years, and over the years my daily routine for living out this mission has looked different.  For a period, I worked in full time ministry as a women’s director of a non-profit youth organization.  For a time it was as an 8th grade Math teacher.  For a time it was leading a small group in my home and teaching a large Bible study at my church while having a “secular” 9-to-5.  And for the past 4 ½ years it has been as an owner of an Ace Hardware, where each day I had the opportunity to show love to my employees, my customers and my vendors.

No matter what my occupation was, my mission was still clear: to love on women and equip them with the hope found in Jesus Christ.

Now that we sold the store, I have the opportunity to encourage women through Bible studies, mentoring, small groups and more, and over the next year, I have some really fun new ways I’ll get to connect with awesome women like you!

I am excited about this new chapter in my life, but I didn’t find it because God wrote it on a wall somewhere.

I simply began to pray, and God began to reveal His plan through my prayers.

In this free worksheet you will learn how to

-Acknowledge your gifts

-Ask God how you can use your gifts, and

-Act on the opportunities God provides.

In the comments I would love to hear some of the unique talents, gifts or passions God has given you and how you use those gifts to share the love of Jesus with others.

I've been a follower of Jesus for over 30 years, and have been teaching God's Word to students and women for nearly 20 years! God has brought me through some difficult chapters in my own life, and now my passion is equipping women like you with tools to embrace your own unexpected chapters in life with grace and truth.

God has gifted me with a smile, music ability, and teaching skills. I have taught voice and piano to kids of all ages but especially teens. He confirmed that again last summer as he led me to a local college Music Mentoring program. I must admit He teaches me more through them than I think I give!.
Thanks for showIng us how things change even with our passions.

Kathy!! Thanks for sharing! Teaching is such an incredible gift. I am so thankful that you get to share the gift of music with young adults! What a gift! Keep up the great work!

  3. I took that test you suggested could be a start. It said mercy, teaching, and exhortation. Thank you for helping me look for a place to start. Christina Lawson
