Inspiring Words

Do you ever have those days when you need a little extra inspiration?  I do.  Today was one of those days.  I was craving the Word and praying God would speak directly to my heart.  I prayed that as I read His Word, I wouldn’t see what I wanted to see, but that I would see what He had for me.

He blew my socks off!

Then I asked Him to show me what I could share with you, and He blew my socks off, again!  Don’t you love how He does that?

Here is what He gave me to share with you.

8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

Four verses packed with inspiration for a Friday!  Let’s break it down, so you don’t miss a thing!
First, Paul is writing to Timothy, he tells Timothy not to be ashamed of the gospel. The he reminds Timothy (and us) that God saved us and called us to a holy life. A holy life, not a mediocre life, but a HOLY life.  A life set apart by grace.
We are called to this holy, set apart life, not by our own abilities, talents, good works, or family history, but according to God’s PURPOSE and GRACE.
Sometimes it’s overwhelming to me that God called ME on purpose.  I know He called me according to His grace because I use up my alloted portion every day.  (Just ask Carl.)  But to think that He called me on purpose.  I’m tempted to think, “Wow, He must have seen something in me that He wanted to use!  How cool!”  Then I come back to reality and realize anything good in me that He can use, is something He designed in me for His purpose. I’m created by the God of the Universe and He created me with a purpose. His purpose and His grace set me apart.
This next phrase really gets me going!  Paul reminds us next that being set apart and living out your purpose is made possible by “Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

JESUS.DESTROYED.DEATH.

He conquered the grave!  He brings life to you and me through the gospel.  But this new life that is set apart isn’t an easy life.  Paul is saying that gospel has brought about suffering in his life.

Did you hear that?  Something difficult came about as a result of following Jesus.  Your problems don’t disappear because Jesus is in your life.  If you are making a decision and one road looks more treacherous and you may face more obstacles, it doesn’t mean that road isn’t the road God has chosen for you.  Following Christ doesn’t make life a cake walk.  However, as we are walking down the rocky road of life, following our calling and our purpose, we can shout along with Paul –
Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.
Do you believe that?  Can you claim that as true?  Can you live these words out today?

Do you believe that living out the calling Christ has given you is worth the suffering that will come with it? Are you convinced that God is able to guard your heart today?  Have you entrusted it to Him?

If not, why not?  What is holding you back from trusting Jesus with your life?  Difficulties come because we live in a fallen world.  But when we trust Christ we can cling to the hope that Jesus will guard and protect what we have entrusted to Him.

He has already overcome the grave.  He has destroyed death!

Will you trust Him to give you the courage to live out the life He has called you to?  To live unashamed?  To live out the gospel despite your circumstances?

There is no room for mediocrity with the gospel.  So let’s be unashamed and live it out to the fullest today!

    Susan,

I’m so glad this spoke to you. God is so generous that way…always giving us exactly what we need, when we need it.
