As I read through Kay’s chapters on Jehovah-rapha, the Lord who Heals, I was deeply convited about my motivation to be healed. I realized that I usually want God to heal the things in my life that make me uncomfortable, things like lonliness, a broken heart, or an illness or disease. But in reading His Word I realized that there was one of the major thing I was missing on this list: SIN!
I have had stages in life where I have earnestly prayed for freedom from sin, but if I’m honest, I usually call on Jehovah-rapha for things I don’t like rather than for the sin God despises. I would rather use the name of God to bring comfort my own life than to bring glory to God. Is it selfish to pray for healing for things like a broken heart or a disease that has ravaged your body? Absolutely not. Trust me, I am praying for complete physical healing of Janie’s kidney. But as followers of Jesus, we can’t stop after we have asked God for everything that we want. We must continue the conversation of prayer to ask God to heal us from our spiritual diseases as well as our physical and emotional ones. We must take the time to listen to Him. We must pray like David did in Psalm 139:22-23.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
