Identity

Overcoming the Identity Crisis

As I read through the pages of the gospel of John, I love marking all of the “I am” phrases.  I am amazed at how well Jesus knew Himself and His purpose here on earth.  I believe that because Jesus knew His identity He could stay focused while He was here.

I think the same is true for us.  When we base our identity on the truth found in God’s Word, THEN we can live out His purpose for our lives.  Knowing who we are allows us to live in freedom.  We can say ‘no’ to things that don’t line up with our identity with more courage and without feeling guilty.  We can also pursue the things God has for us with great tenacity because we know that He is able to fulfill the purpose He called us to.

Today I want to hear from you.  I want to hear some “I am” phrases from you.  I will start the list with a few of my favorite verses that help me remember who I am, and I want to encourage you to share a verse or two that helps remind you of your true identity in Christ.

If we are going to stop believing lies, we must replace the lies with truth.  So today is a day to focus on the truth God says about us!

I AM

I am FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY made.  Psalm 139:14

I am a SAINT.  Ephesians 1:1

I am ADOPTED into God’s family.  Ephesians 1:5

I am REDEEMED through God’s lavish grace.  Ephesians 1:7-8

  1. Galatians 2:20 – I am crucified with Christ and he lives in me (as does the power of his resurrection and the conquering of my sin).

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (NIV)
