Do you know anybody who is a fun sucker? You know, the person who, no matter what happens, no matter how much fun you are having, can find something negative to say and suck the fun right out of your day. I like to call these people fun suckers. The enemy is also a fun sucker. He comes along at the height of our lives (or even just on a average good day) and throws some sort of negative thought our way. It might be a thought that causes us to worry or panic. It might be a statement that causes us to crave the sin we wish to avoid. Or it might be a reminder of the past sin we used to love.
The enemy loves to suck the fun and the fruit out of our lives and remind of us of the past when we didn’t bear fruit. He tries to keep us focused on the past in order to inhibit forward momentum. In his craftiness, he gets us to start telling ourselves, “You don’t deserve this new blessing because of this past mistake.” And we often begin to believe it. We think that makes logical sense…”What goes around, comes around.” Right? WRONG!!! Read these words from Isaiah that God has to say to his children.
21 “Remember these things, O Jacob,
for you are my servant, O Israel.
I have made you, you are my servant;
O Israel, I will not forget you.
22 I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,
your sins like the morning mist.
Return to me,
for I have redeemed you.”
23 Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done this;
shout aloud, O earth beneath.
Burst into song, you mountains,
you forests and all your trees,
for the LORD has redeemed Jacob,
he displays his glory in Israel.
God’s Word tells us that He sweeps away our offenses like a cloud, our sins like the morning mist! That means they are completely GONE!! Picture the sky after a storm. The clouds have rolled away and the sky is perfectly blue. Sure different clouds will eventually roll in, but they are not the clouds of the past. These clouds are gone FOREVER!! Our response to this should be to “Sing for joy!” As we claim the truth that our sins have been swept away we can give God the praise and glory He deserves. We can take the focus off of ourselves, and we can celebrate the mighty work that God has accomplished in our lives.
So what will you do today when approached by a fun sucker? Will you allow the fun to be sucked out of your life or will you cling to the truth, that YOU ARE REDEEMED!!!! I’m choosing the joy of redemption over fun suckers today. Will you join me?
