Hey, Friends! I realized that October has been a significant month for me the past couple years! It was in October 2008 that I first registered my blog (even though I didn't start writing til a few months later). And last year, I was married in October. So I thought as a reflection back to the first days of my blog I would repost my first blog! It's fun to look back. Thanks to all who have joined me along this journey!
Lift your eyes and look to the heavens
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one,
and calls them each by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.
The Holy Bible : New International Version. electronic ed. Grand Rapids : Zondervan, 1996, c1984, S. Is 40:26
Growing up in Nebraska, I'll never forget what it was like at night in the country to lie on my back in the grass and truly star gaze. With so few lights and such small cities, I could see an infinite number of stars. My friends and I would lie for hours talking and staring up at the sky. The ambiance created by the stars was the perfect backdrop for honest conversation-the kind of conversation you save for a select few friends whom you hold dear. The awe we felt as we took in the sight of the starry host led us into a place of reflection that was precious and tender. Even at a young age we knew there was something amazing about the Creator of these stars. As we grew up and fell in love with the Creator, we began to use these intimate moments under the stars as opportunities to have amazing conversations not only with each other, but also with the One who created the starry host.
And as we grew in our relationship with Him, we began to read His love letter to us, the Bible. In His Word we discovered verses like this one that moved us from being awestruck about the stars, to awestruck about His love. Can you picture it? In your mind can you imagine God creating the universe and bring the stars out one by one and calling them each by name? It overwhelms me. I know that if the Creator of the universe takes enough care to create each star, place it in its unique place in the sky, AND call it by name, then He must be that diligent in His love and care of me. Have you ever thought about that? God didn't reach in his bag of stars, grab a handful and scatter them across the sky letting them fall wherever may be. Rather He took the time to place the stars and call them by name, this leaves me speechless because this is a small relfection of how He deals with me. Knowing His personal care for the stars, leads me to a place of confidence knowing He will personally take care of me. He didn't just throw me into this crazy universe and let me land wherever might be. He was and is intentional about planning my life because He loves me. This doesn't mean everything is perfect, but it means everything perfectly accomplishes His will. Knowing He calls each star by name, assures me that He calls me by name. He doesn't address me as part of a unit or social group, He calls ME by my name. The last part of this verse says, “Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” Wow! He personally ensures that not one star He created is missing. If He uses His great power and mighty strength to take care of the stars to this degree, then He how much more does He also to take care of me. Psalm 139 says He knows everything that is going on in my life, from when I sit down to when I stand up. That is a personal God. Nothing we do is outside of His sight, and nothing that happens to us is hidden from Him. This doesn't mean we won't have pain, but as we walk through the pain, we are not alone. He is there.
God's love for you and for me is deeper and wider and longer than we can fathom. His love for you is personal. He knows your name. He knows where you are. He knows what you need.
Take a few moments to speak to the Creator of the universe. Thank Him for His personal involvement in your life.
Maybe you're at a point that you can't feel or see His involvement. Let the words of Isaiah give you HOPE that He is involved, that He does care and that He knows your name. You can be real and honest in your conversation with the Lord. You don't have to edit your words to sound like anyone else. Tell Him your heart. Begin the conversation, and relish in the fact that God LOVES YOU!
Going deeper: If you would like to read more about God's personal love for you, slowly walk through Psalm 139. Write down what you find out about God's love for you. Then reflect on this: How does knowing God's love for you and His personal involvement in your life, change the way you think about yourself and how you live your life?
