Your Love Story

Just last night I received an email from one of my best friends sharing the romantic proposal she received, as her fiancé  asked for her hand in marriage.  It’s a great romantic story to read just before Valentine’s Day:

My sweet friend lives in Mexico, and her fiancé picked her up Sunday for a boat ride.  On the boat he had arranged priority seating which kept them from being soaked while on the ride.  The boat ride ended at a beautiful island called “bird island.”  The island has no running water or electricity and is preserved for natural wildlife.  Once on the island, the other passengers all went to eat, but she and her fiancé lagged behind, then he walked her over to a secluded part of the island away from the other guests where a private table had been set for them.  On the table was a beautiful bouquet of her favorite flowers.  She saw the table and was in awe, but before she could even sit down, he pulled out a small box, and asked her to marry him!!!  She of course said, “YES!!”

Have you ever wanted a romantic love story like this to happen to you?  Well, my friend, it already has!  My sweet friend Jesus has written a love story personally for you that cannot be matched by any earthly love.  If you have spent anytime in church you have probably heard John 3:16, “For God SO LOVED the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life!”  If you’ve read or heard this verse or even memorized it some point along the way, this passage may have lost the romance due to familiarity, but friend, this is verse sums up the most romantic story ever told.  And the story is for you!

As we walk thru this one verse, I pray that this love story comes alive for you for the very first time, or that it takes you back to the place where you first fell in love and rekindles the flame.

“For God so loved the world…”

God is the creator of the Universe!  We learn in Psalm 139 that He not only created the universe, but that He created you and me.  Psalm 139:13 says, “For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”  What a personal God!  He actually handmade you!  He picked out your eyes and your hands and your toes.  This is the same God that created the entire Universe in six days!  He personally spent time fashioning you.  God loves you so much that He would do anything to have a relationship with you.  In fact He did EVERYTHING to write His love story with you.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…”

Here is the EVERYTHING He did to write your love story.  God created us to be in relationship with Him, but something got in the way.  We call that something “sin.”  Simply defined, that “sin” is the junk in our lives.  Think about archery; sin is hitting anything other than a bull’s eye.  It is missing the mark.  It is anything that is less than God’s best for our lives.  The price we have to pay for our sin is death, and someone had to pay it.  So God, who is rich in mercy, sent His one and only Son…his precious Son, to earth to pay our penalty.  Yes, Jesus literally left heaven and came to earth.  He came to earth to pay the price of sin for you so that you can have a relationship with your Heavenly Father!   All the epic love stories depict the great lengths someone will go to in order to be with the one he loves.  But all of those stories pale in comparison to Jesus Christ leaving heaven to come to earth to die for you and for me.  Then, God does something amazing, Jesus doesn’t stay dead!  God raises Him from the dead three days later!  The story just keeps getting better…

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life.”

God let Jesus die to pay our penalty.  Then God raised Him from the dead three days later.  God did all the work to make a way for us to be in relationship with  Him.  Do you believe this?  This verse says if you believe in Jesus, if you believe that He came to earth, died for you, and was raised from the dead, then you can have life rather than death!  Yes, this is your love story.  Your King sent His only Son to die so that He could be in relationship with you.  That is how much you are loved.  If you believe this, you can walk into a relationship with your King and you will spend eternity with Him!

Of all the Valentine’s Day cards I have read this year, I haven’t seen anything that comes close to being as romantic as this!  Whether you fell in love with Jesus years ago, yesterday or you are still gathering the facts, this Valentine’s Day, celebrate your love with Jesus all over again as you remember the price He paid for you.  You are loved my friend.  You are loved and wanted and cherished.  Someone is thinking of you.  The greatest love story EVER has been written and you are the star of the show!

This Valentine’s Day write a love note to your Savior thanking Him for  paying the price for you sin.  Thank Him for making a way for you to be in the greatest relationship of your life, a relationship that will never end.  Spend some time telling Him all the things you love about Him.  Enjoy the romance of the King!
